JOHN HUMPHRIES AND MATT NICHOLAS QUALIFY FOR U.S. MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Kinder, Louisiana—August 8, 2022

Three-time Louisiana Amateur Champion John Humphries of Woodworth shot a new course record, 9-under par 63,  at Koasati Pines at Coushatta on Monday to earn medalist honors in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Sectional Qualifier. Humphries was the only player to have a bogey free scorecard. He birdied the first four holes and holes 7 and 9 to shoot 30 on the inward nine. He added birdies on holes 12 and 13, and he barely missed a 20-foot eagle putt on the 18th which would have gotten him to 10-under par. It was an incredible performance on a golf course that was playing over 7,000 yards. Matt Nicholas of Lake Charles grabbed the second qualifying spot with a 5-under par 67. This is the second year in a row that Nicholas has qualified for this championship. He and Humphries now advance to the championship proper at Erin Hills in Wisconsin, September 10-15. It was a Louisiana sweep across the board in this qualifier. Chuck Spears of Alexandria defeated Andrew Noto of Metairie on the third playoff hole to earn the 1st alternate spot.

The USGA accepted a record number of entries this year (5,708) and 264 players will compete in the  2022 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. For more facts about the championship, visit: 2022 U.S. Mid-Amateur Fast Facts (usga.org)
