Lafayette, Louisiana – September 13, 2023
This weekend, Bayou Desiard Country Club in Monroe, Louisiana, will be the venue for the 13th Junior River Cup, an annual golf event inspired by the Ryder Cup. Here, twenty of Louisiana’s top junior golfers will go head-to-head with their counterparts from Mississippi.
The history of the Junior River Cup series is quite evenly matched, with the overall score currently tied at 6-6. Mississippi had a strong run from 2011 to 2015, winning five consecutive times. In response, Louisiana enjoyed five years of victory from 2016 to 2020. In 2021, Mississippi reclaimed the trophy, while Louisiana faced a setback in 2022. Now, Louisiana is eager to win it back this year.
The competition will feature different golf formats over the weekend. Saturday morning will see the Four-Ball (Better-Ball) match play, followed by Foursome (Alternate Shot) match play on Saturday afternoon. The weekend will conclude with Singles matches on Sunday. Each match will contribute one point, and in case of a tie, both teams will receive half a point. In total, there are 40 points at stake, with the first team to reach 20.5 points being crowned the Junior River Cup champion. If the score ends 20-20, the previous champion will retain the title.
The teams consist of 20 players divided into various age groups, including boys aged 10-11, boys aged 12-13, boys aged 14-15, boys aged 16-18, and girls aged 13-18. Team Louisiana was selected based on player of the year points from the Louisiana Junior Golf Tour, along with one selection made by the Tournament Committee.
As the weekend approaches, the scenic Bayou Desiard Country Club will host an exciting golfing event filled with talent and competition.
