Mathews, Louisiana – July 13, 2021
William Paysse of Temple, Texas fired a 36-hole total of 8-under par 136 at LaTour Golf Club in Mathews, Louisiana to earn medalist honors at the 2021 U.S. Amateur Championship Sectional Qualifier. Paysse now advances to the championship proper, to be conducted at Oakmont Country Club, August 9-15. Paysse, a member of the Texas A&M Men’s Golf Team, carded a first round 69 and a second round 67. He made nine birdies and one bogey over the two-day qualifying stretch. Charlie Flynn of Lafayette, Louisiana (68-69-137) and Grayson Gilbert of Monroe, Louisiana (70-68-138) also qualified for the most prestigious championship in amateur golf. Michael Smith of Lafayette, Louisiana (70-69-139) is First Alternate and Joshua Achord of Abita Springs, Louisiana (71-70-141) is Second Alternate.
It was a long and testy two days of golf for competitors battling for the three qualifying spots at LaTour. South Louisiana has been hammered with rain over the last several weeks, and this qualifier was originally scheduled for Ellendale Country Club in Houma, Louisiana. Ellendale, site of last week’s LGA Junior Amateur Championships, was unplayable due to the amount of recent rainfall. The Louisiana Golf Association conducts this qualifier on behalf of the USGA, and fortunately for everyone involved, LGA member club La Tour stepped up to host the qualifier over two days. LaTour Owner Trey Boucvalt, General Manager Kathy Daye, Nicholls State Men’s Golf Coach James Schilling, and Superintendent Brett Vitrano, are all to be commended for coming together and helping to create a superb game plan on short notice.
