Louisiana Junior Golf Spotlight: Fiona Marks

November 1, 2020

The Louisiana Junior Golf Tour member spotlight is a monthly article highlighting the strong talent in our state. The first junior golfer to be featured is Fiona Marks of New Orleans. Fiona is a senior at Newman High School, and she has been a member of the Louisiana Junior Golf Tour since its inception in 2019. Fiona will attend Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee in the fall of 2021 and play for the women’s golf team. “I am so excited to join the energetic and welcoming team with a very great and supportive coach,” said Marks. Fiona is active in community service, and her current school activity is the mental health awareness club.

Marks has an insightful perspective when it comes to golf. “The game of golf to me means a lifelong challenge that reflects gained patience, etiquette and mindset. I think the game teaches you to make it through up and downs in life but also focusing on moving forward and not getting stuck on one negative thing.” Here’s our Q & A with Fiona:

1.       What is your favorite golf memory?

I think my favorite golf memory is always reuniting with my golf friends in Germany and playing a partner tournament where we were allowed to dress up in costumes.

2.       If you were a golf club, which club would you be and why?

If I were a golf club, I would be a hybrid because I am a “hit or miss” just like the hybrid. Either it works out very well, or not so well. But I think the way I approach using my hybrid reflects my life. If I go in confidently, then it ends up well. But if I go in timidly and thinking of all of the things that might go wrong, it will end up not good.

3.       What is your dream golf course to play?

I would love to play the Old Course in Andrews because it is considered the oldest and most iconic golf course, even if it might be a very tricky course. Also being in Scotland with its beautiful countryside makes me really want to play the Old Course.

4.       Along with yourself, who would be in your ideal golf foursome?

My ideal golf foursome would be Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, and Tiger Woods.

5.       Favorite PGA or LPGA player?

 Nelly Korda

6.       What sport would you play if you did not play golf?

If I did not play golf, I would most likely still be playing volleyball because I used to play a lot and had so much fun with it especially being on a team. If I picked up a new sport instead of golf, I would choose track and field because I like to run and would think running with your friends is even more fun.

7.       Favorite golf movie?

My favorite golf movie is “Happy Gilmore” because it always provides a good laugh in a sport that we all take too serious.

8.       What are you currently binge-watching?

I am currently in the middle of a couple TV shows, but my favorite one out of them is “Stranger Things.”

9.       What is your favorite subject in school?

My favorite subject in school is either Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II or AP Studio Art, even though they are completely opposite classes. Anatomy is not a required class and is an extra elective you can choose, which I did because I’ve always loved the medicine field and find it all very interesting. I also really enjoy making art because it’s a great way to relax when there is a lot of stress going on around you.

10.   Favorite quote, golf or non-golf related?

“Treat people the way that you want to be treated”
