Querbes Golf Course Celebrates 100 Years of Golf and Community Leadership Under Nathan Barrow

Shreveport, LA – This year, Querbes Golf Course is celebrating an incredible milestone—100 years as a cornerstone of the Shreveport golf community. Under the leadership of Head Golf Professional Nathan Barrow, the course is thriving, balancing its rich history with exciting new developments that ensure its place as a welcoming hub for golfers of all ages and skill levels.

Querbes, the oldest and most historic active golf course in the area, has played a significant role in shaping the game locally. It’s where golf legends Hal Sutton and David Toms were introduced to the sport, and it once hosted an exhibition match featuring PGA greats Sam Snead and Ben Hogan.

Nathan Barrow joined Querbes after spending 25 years in private clubs, taking on the challenge of assisting the Querbes Park Foundation and the City of Shreveport in revitalizing this beloved course. “Querbes isn’t just a golf course—it’s a community,” Barrow said. “It’s where friendships are rekindled, new players fall in love with the game, and memories are made.”

In addition to running the golf shop and overseeing instruction, Barrow has been instrumental in driving growth and creating an exceptional experience for players. “Querbes truly has something for everyone. It’s fun, accessible, and still challenges players no matter their skill level,” he said.

The course recently underwent significant renovations to enhance its historic charm while adding modern features. With help from the Querbes Park Foundation and Jim Lipe Designs, the front nine was re-routed, all 18 greens were reshaped and sprigged, and an impressive 8,200-square-foot putting and chipping green was created. “The new entrance, along with the redesigned first and tenth tees, has completely transformed the look and feel of Querbes. It’s something the community can be proud of,” Barrow added.

To ensure the course remains in top condition, an aggressive turf management plan was implemented, with Bermuda grass becoming the dominant playing surface. These steps ensure that Querbes will continue to thrive for years to come.

Querbes also plays a critical role in fostering junior golf development. The course regularly hosts school events, supports the Front 9 Tour, and partners with the Louisiana Junior Golf Tour (LJGT) and Youth on Course. “The future of golf lies with our juniors, and we’re proud to be part of their journey,” Barrow said.

Looking ahead, Barrow hopes to host a season-ending team event for the LJGT, inspired by the success of the Sam Burns tournament. “Northwest Louisiana has so much young talent, and Querbes would be the perfect place to showcase it,” he shared.

Querbes Golf Course remains dedicated to providing a great experience for every golfer. “Querbes is a user-friendly course that offers challenges and enjoyment for players of all levels,” Barrow said.

As Querbes celebrates its centennial, Barrow wants the Shreveport community to remember one simple message: “Golf is for everyone, and above all, it’s meant to be fun!”
