One of the best honors in the world of golf literature is the USGA’s Herbert Warren Wind Award, established in 1987. This year, local Louisiana golfer Gordon Hobson of New Orleans has been nominated for the award for his debut novel, Calvin Peete: Golf’s Forgotten Star.
Hobson’s deep connection to the game spans a lifetime. Raised in a golf-loving family, he has experienced the sport from many perspectives—as a player, caddie, and spectator. Over the years, he has played at iconic courses like Pebble Beach, Torrey Pines, and Barton Creek, and even teed off in Scotland and Ireland. Hobson’s golf journey also includes a notable moment in history: he caddied for Bruce Fleisher during his victory at the 1968 U.S. Amateur at Scioto Country Club. After retiring from a successful law career in Ohio, Hobson now resides in New Orleans, where he enjoys spending time with his family and playing at local golf courses.
In his novel, Hobson tells the story of Calvin Peete’s remarkable journey, overcoming numerous obstacles to break into the PGA Tour in 1976. The LGA is incredibly proud of Hobson’s achievement and can’t wait to see who wins. The winner of the 2024 USGA’s Herbert Warren Wind Award will be announced in February 2025.
