THE
OAKS AT SHERWOOD LEADS AFTER FIRST ROUND OF LOUISIANA GOLF
ASSOCIATION CLUB TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
April 24, 2010 -- Gonzales, LA -- The Oaks at Sherwood from Baton
Rouge took advantage of a nine-under par 63 shot by the team of
Blaine Patin and Donny Schmitt to take a two-shot lead heading into
final round play at the Louisiana Golf Association Club Team
Championship. The Oaks at Sherwood survived the uncertain weather on
Saturday to fire a 14-under par score of 130 and take a two-shot
lead over the second place team from the Louisiana Amateur Golf
Tour/South. In a format where a team counts two of their three
four-ball scores in the first round, Scott Wilfong and Danny Nelson
shot a five-under 67 for the Oaks, with Garrett Westbrook and Brett
Baker rounding out the team’s scores with a one-under 71.
Patin and Schmitt played their first 11 holes in three-under par
then turned on the after-burners, finishing with birdies on #12,
#13, #14, and #16 before Patin hit his second shot into the hole for
an eagle two on the difficult par four 18th, a fitting climax to the
best score of the day.
Louisiana Am Tour/South was led by the team of Mike Mims and Mick
Huffman with a seven-under par 65. After bogeying the par-five
second hole and turning in one-under par 35, they reeled off two
birdies and two eagles on the back nine, Huffman making an eagle
three on the par-five 13th and Mims matching it with an eagle three
on the par-five 16th island green signature hole at the Links course
at Pelican Point GC. Mike Kapp and Jeff Lorio fired a five-under par
67 and Sean Hillis and Andrew Seefield a three-under par 69. The
University Club from Baton Rouge is alone is third place at 11-under
133, highlighted by the eight-under par 64 from the team of Scott
Haynie and Ben Wheeler.
Clubs participating in the 22nd LGA Club Team Championship are
represented by six-man teams. Saturday’s play consisted of four-ball
stroke play with each team counting the two best of their three
four-ball scores. Sunday’s play consists of individual stroke play
with a team’s score being determined by counting the best four of
six individual scores. With the number of scores being counted on
Sunday doubling those counted on Saturday, no first round lead is
insurmountable.
As mentioned, the Championship is being conducted at the Links
course at Pelican Point Golf Club in Gonzales, a venue that also
hosted this event in both 1999 and 2000. The course dodged the
severe weather that hit most of south Louisiana Saturday morning,
with play commencing on time at 7:30 AM and never having to be
suspended for weather. Golfers had to contend with swirling winds
most of the day but the hail and tornado-type activity that much of
the state endured spared Pelican Point. The course measured just
over 6,600 yards and played to a par of 72 on Saturday. Final round
starting times will begin a 7:30 AM on Sunday with the leaders set
to go off at 12:30, 12:40, and 12:50 PM.
