STEVE LUMINAIS AND JAY LEBLANC TAKE HOME TITLE AT LOUISIANA GOLF
ASSOCIATION 4-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP
July 18, 2010 -- New Orleans, LA -- Steve Luminais of Reserve and Jay
Leblanc of Montz took home the Louisiana Golf Association 4-Ball
Championship on Sunday at English Turn G & CC, besting 2008 Champions
Tommy Brennan of Covington and Gayle Sanchez of Baton Rouge on the second
hole of a sudden death playoff.
The first playoff hole (#18) was halved with pars. Brennan then hit his
second shot to the par four 16th hole to seven feet and Luminais followed
by hitting his second inside of Brennan, to five feet. Brennan’s putt slid
by the hole, setting the stage for Luminais to end the suspense by
knocking his squarely into the hole.
Playing one group ahead of Luminais and Leblanc, the Brennan/Sanchez team
struggled on the front side Sunday. After Sanchez birdied the first two
holes, they played the last seven holes on the front one-over par, turning
in 35. After a par on #10, Brennan eagled the par-five 11th and birdied
the short par-three 12th. Sanchez then birdied #13 and after a team bogey
on #14, he also birdied #15 and #17. A finishing par brought them in with
a five-under 31 on the back for their second consecutive 66.
Luminais and Leblanc put together bookend 33s, their day beginning with a
birdie/eagle start on #1 and #2. All pars to finish the front allowed them
to turn at 3-under par. Birdies on #10 (Luminais) and #11 (Leblanc) and
#16 and #17 (Luminais) were sandwiched around their only bogey of the day
at #15. A closing par on the difficult 471-yard par four 18th brought them
in at 66.
Rounding out the Top Five teams, and ending in a tie for third place were:
Eddie Seabaugh and Tim Wilhite of Bossier City 68/65-133, Tyler Ledet of
Alexandria and Jason Noto of Luling 67/66-133, and Justin Sevier of
Shreveport and Brandon Aydlett of River Ridge 67/66-133, all finishing one
shot out of the playoff.
The Jack Nicklaus-designed track was in great condition for this field of
the top players in the state. It played to a par of 72 on Sunday at just
over 6,850 yards and continued to draw rave reviews from the field. The
field dodged the thunderstorms that plague south Louisiana this time of
year, most of Sunday’s weather staying just west of English Turn.
English Turn G & CC hosted last year’s LGA Amateur Championship and will
also serve as host to the LGA Mid-Amateur in August of 2011.
