JEFF LORIO AND BRETT HENDERSON LEAD AFTER FIRST ROUND OF LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION 4-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP

July 17, 2010 -- New Orleans, LA -- Birdies were plentiful on Saturday at English Turn Golf & Country Club, as the Louisiana Golf Association conducted its 27th annual 4-Ball Championship at the Jack Nicklaus-designed facility on New Orleans’ Westbank. Jeff Lorio of New Orleans and Brett Henderson of LaPlace shot seven-under par 65 to lead the teams of Garrett Westbrook of Baton Rouge/Blake Kelley of Mandeville, Tommy Brennan of Covington/Gayle Sanchez of Baton Rouge, and Jay Leblanc of Montz/Steve Luminais of Reserve by one shot heading into Sunday’s final round. Westbrook and Kelley are defending the title they won at TPC Louisiana last year, while the Brennan/Sanchez team won this title in 2008 at Carter Plantation.

Henderson made birdies on #4, #8, #12, #15, and #16, with Lorio chipping in with birdies on #6, #10, and #17. They finished their round with the only blemish of the day, a bogey five on the difficult par four 18th.

The Westbrook/Kelley and Brennan/Sanchez teams were paired together as the two most recent Champions and didn’t disappoint. Brennan and Sanchez came out of the gate with birdies on the first four holes, turning in six-under par 30 after also birdying #6 and #9. Another birdie by Brennan on the par three 12th got the team to seven-under but they gave it back on #16 with a bogey, then finished with pars on #17 and #18 to post their 66.

Westbrook and Kelley had bookend 33s, with Kelley making five birdies and Westbrook contributing two. Their only bogey of the day also came on the final hole, the aforementioned 18th.

The Leblanc/Luminais team, the only one of the four leading teams to play in the afternoon, started on the 10th hole and also had bookend nines of 33, Luminais doing most of the damage with birdies on #11, #12, #15, #1, #2, and #7. Leblanc contributed with a birdie on #13. Their only bogey of the day came on the par four 14th hole.

Sunday should be a battle royale with no fewer than 18 teams within three shots of the leaders, seven teams having fired five-under 67s on Saturday with eight more shooting 68s.

The shot of the day was hit by Scott Hebert on the 145-yard third hole. He hit a nine-iron into the hole for the fourth ace of his golfing career.

The English Turn track has drawn rave reviews from this field of the top players in the state. It played to a par of 72 at just over 6,800 yards. English Turn was the long-time host to the PGA Tour’s annual New Orleans stop, hosted the 2009 LGA Amateur Championship, and will also serve as venue for the LGA Mid-Amateur Championship in August of 2011.

Sunday’s times will begin at 7:30 AM off both #1 and #10 tees with the leaders scheduled to start off #1 at 1:30 PM.
